Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez in Only Murders in the Building

Only Murders in the Building: what I loved about season 4

Only Murders in the Building, season 4, has some wonderful moments. This clever series is consistently good. It’s time to mention some of the best things in season 4.

We knew from the last scene in season 3 of Only Murders in the Building that Sazz (Jane Lynch) was the next murder in the building. When season 4 begins, two wonderful moments start us off. First, our podcasters Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) waste an entire episode before they realize Sazz was murdered in Charles’s kitchen. Mabel, the smart one, figured it out.

Mabel also suggested that maybe Charles was the target, not his beloved stunt double. That brought in a ton of suspects. The suspects are always outstanding actors. This show does attract excellent players.

Second, Hollywood in the form of Bev Melon (Molly Shannon) comes calling with an offer to make a movie about the podcast and the three podcasters. Playing the podcasters will be Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, and Zach Galifianakis. That’s kind of hilarious right there. Each of these guest stars were killing it in their own way. I especially got a kick out of Eva Longoria. (Eva Longoria playing Eva Longoria was also very funny in In a World.) While Charles, Oliver and Mabel are trying to figure out what happened to Sazz, the three actors follow them around and interfere in the murder case.

Da'Vine Joy Randolph in Only Murders in the Building
New York’s finest

I’m so fond of the regulars on this show. They may only appear in short bits, but they are wonderful. Da’Vine Joy Randolph is a favorite, but the entire cast is top notch.

Paul Rudd in Only Murders in the Building
How did Paul Rudd get back in there?

I liked the supernatural turn in season 4. Charles talking to Sazz as if she were in the room with him was funny. Sazz led him around from clue to clue in his dreams. It was a way to keep Jane Lynch there, even though she was dead. Speaking of keeping actors who got killed off coming back, you have to love the way they worked Paul Rudd into season 4. I loved how Amy Ryan as Jan, Charles’ former girlfriend, escapes from prison and keeps popping out of his closet at unexpected moments.

Siena Werber and Catherine Cohen in Only Murders in the Building
The Brothers sisters

In episode 6, everything went completely bonkers. That’s a little early in a 10 episode series for things to get bonkers. But it revealed another dead person in the building, showed what nutcases the movie’s directors, The Brothers sisters (Catherine Cohen and Siena Werber), were as they shot a movie within a movie. Howard (Michael Cyril Creighton) was also shooting movies of everything at the request of the podcasters. This bonkers episode also showed how some of the characters who kept showing up in bit parts (for example, Griffin Dunne, Richard Kind, Kumail Nanjiani, Daphne Rubin-Vega) were connected to each other and possibly to the murder(s).

I love a bonkers episode.

Meryl Streep and Melissa McCarthy in Only Murders in the Building
There’s nothing better

I love that Charles’ sister in the suburbs is Melissa McCarthy. Melissa McCarthy and Meryl Streep get into a knock-down drag-out fight over Oliver. What better thing could you ever hope to see on your television screen than Melissa McCarthy and Meryl Streep in a knock-down drag-out fight over a man? There is nothing.

What’s better than one bonkers episode? Another one. I loved that all the suspects they had in the murder(s) turned out to be innocent. These “investigators” are known for suspecting the wrong people. Why not do it up big?

Well, they finally figure out who was killing people. Of course they did. I won’t tell you who it was.

Martin Short and Meryl Streep are so cute together. Oliver and Loretta should get married again in every season finale. While we’re on the topic of the final episode, I kept waiting for another body to drop at the end. When Téa Leoni appeared for about 20 seconds, I thought, “Oh, no, they are going to kill Téa Leoni!” Nope. Her character is a set up for season 5. That’s not who died at the end of season 4. I won’t tell you who it was.

I loved that the entire season 4 of Only Murders in the Building was a spoof of actors, acting, story structure, and Hollywood.

All of season 4 is now available on Hulu. It’s a great watch. The women directors in this season were Jamie Babbit, Shari Springer German, and Jessica Yu.

Spread the love
