Role Play review: another secret assassin story

Kaley Cuoco in Role Play

Role Play is just like The Family Plan, which I reviewed last week. Except the secret assassin in the family is a woman, not a man. And except The Family Plan was kind of funny and Role Play is on the tired, flat side. Also except, I thought Kaley Cuoco was miscast as the killer. Kaley Cuoco was a producer on the film so maybe it wasn’t so much a casting problem as her picking herself something new to try and it not quite working out.

I thought Kaley Cuoco was brilliant in The Flight Attendant. That was a similar kind of action packed role. I don’t know why this one wasn’t as good, but it was definitely in the average range.

Kaley Cuoco and David Oyelowo in Role Play

The plot is that Emma (Kaley Cuoco) travels a lot. You know, when she’s off killing people. When she’s home with her husband Dave (David Oyelowo) and their two kids she’s a typical suburban mom.

The two of them decide to spice up their marriage by leaving the kids with his sister and going to a fancy hotel. They will pretend to be strangers and hook up in the bar. Role play.

Kaley Cuoco and Bill Nighy in Role Play

Before Dave gets to the bar, Emma sits alone. She’s approached by Bob (Bill Nighy). She realizes instantly that he’s out to kill her and her cover was blown somehow. (Really, Bill Nighy cast as a killer?)

Emma gets rid of Bob, kisses the family goodbye and leaves on a jet plane. Before she can make arrangements to bring the family to Germany where she plans to hide, the sh*t hits the fan.

David Oyelowo is such a good actor. He is the surprised and shocked husband in this to perfection. The cops come looking for Emma and so does the best character in the whole film, Gwen (Connie Nielsen). I won’t tell you what she’s doing there, but you’re going to love her.

Things get crazy after that with lots of guns and tranquilizer darts and puppies and promises of ice cream.

I give this one 5 out of 10 stars. With such a great cast it should be more. The film was directed by Thomas Vincent. It’s streaming on Prime Video. Please share your opinions about it if you watch it.
