Whitstable Pearl S3 review: this cozy English mystery shines

Kerry Godliman in Whitstable Pearl

Whitstable Pearl, season 3, continues its streak of warm, cozy mysteries and crimes in the small English coastal town of Whitstable. All the episodes of season 3 are available now on Acorn TV.

In reviews of season 1 and season 2 of Whitstable Pearl I introduced the situation and many of the characters. All that is still the same information.

A whole new set of crimes and mysteries need solving in the new season. Each brings new characters into the story until the crime is solved.

A throughline plot in season 3 involve Pearl’s (Kerry Godliman) son Charlie (Rohan Nedd), who is supposed to be in Canada but apparently is not.

Mike is back

The second throughline plot in season 3 is about the policeman Mike (Howard Charles) who was gone for several months. His story involves finding some closure for his grief and guilt over the loss of his wife. Several of the crimes involve losing loved ones in various ways and all of them resonate with him in a personal way.

When Mike returns, Pearl is still dating Tom (Robert Webb), but we all know he is the wrong guy for her and that fizzles out. Pearl and Mike still aren’t an item – it’s a long wait for these two to figure it out – but it doesn’t become annoying.

Ruby and Molly

Ruby (Isobelle Molloy) and Pearl’s mom Molly (Frances Barber) help Pearl run the restaurant. Ruby proves to be a creative and outstanding chef. Molly loves to insert herself into the investigations. She gets really involved in one case about a 30 year old murder. Interestingly, that case also connects to Mike’s police partner, Nikki (Sophia Del Pizzo).

There’s a fun case about a haunted house on Halloween and a knock-off version of Alfred Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train. (Season 2 did a take-off of Rear Window.) Of course, Pearl is usually two steps ahead of Mike and Nikki in every investigation. That part of the formula for this series is sacred.

A beauty of Whitstable Pearl is how kind most of the characters are and how much good-hearted charm the series delivers between the mysteries. There’s not much in the bloody, gruesome department in this English series, which is a pleasant change. Whether you only need to see season 3 or you’ve never seen any of the three seasons, you’re in for a treat with this one.

  1. Absolutely love this series! Great stories about adults living their lives (and solving crimes). Beautiful scenery. No blood, guts, serial killers – just “regular” mysteries. I just love it!
