Wynonna Earp Vengeance is a one-off movie playing free on Tubi that brings back the main cast of the series Wynonna Earp. It’s a perfect example of what makes the #E4L (Earper for Life) crowd demand more and more of this fun fantasy series.
I’ll be spoiler free in reviewing Wynonna Earp Vengeance, but do be aware the beginning and ending may break your heart. Hearts don’t stay broken forever in this fantasy world, so I’m crossing my fingers that more movies with the Earp team will cheer us right back up.
Something evil surfaces in the Ghost River Triangle that makes Waverly Earp (Dominique Provost-Chalkey) call her sister Wynonna (Melanie Scrofano) and tell her to get back home pronto.
We’re several years beyond where the TV series ended with the beautiful and happy wedding of Waverly and Nicole Haught (Katherine Barrell). Wayhaught has been enjoying married life on the Earp homestead while Nicole cleaned up Purgatory as sheriff.
Wynonna and Doc Holliday (Tim Rozon) spent the time wandering the country doing mostly illegal stuff and saving money to get a safe place for their daughter to come live with them.
The four have a warm reunion. It’s been several years, but the actors fell back into their parts with so much joy, you’d think they just came home to fresh bread straight from the oven. These actors are perfect together, which is a big part of the reason why Wynonna Earp and Wynonna Earp Vengeance are such good television.
The evil in this film comes in the form of Mina (Karen Knox), who Wynonna knew as a teenager living in a group home. Mina spent the last 20 years in hell (literal hell) and she’s mad about it. She thinks Wynonna has what she needs to escape from her situation.
Of course there has to be a fight. Our heroes fight off the hounds of hell. Doc and Wynonna stand atop a railroad car and do a shooting ballet while plugging the bad guys. Waverly and Nicole help with rifles, and Randy Nedley (Greg Lawson) shows up using his truck as a lethal weapon.
The movie was written by Emily Andras and directed by Paolo Barzman. Emily Andras writes outstanding one-liners full of wacky sexual innuendo. She’s the brains and creative genius behind this series. She wrote something action packed, funny, and full of love. She brought in threads and ideas from the TV series to provide continuity. If you’ve never seen the TV series you may miss some of the jokes (like a comment about the stairs in the Earper homestead), but you’ll still enjoy it. There are visual gags, too. For instance the huge number on the roof of Nicole Haught’s sheriff’s car is 69 even though she’s the only sheriff for miles around.
Favorites from the series like Jann Arden, Dani Kind, and Varun Saranga showed up for brief bits.
I thought it was a total delight. I know there were some really sad parts, but I have hope for this fantasy drama to find a creative path back to happier things in the future. I have hope for more Earper movies! Go watch this one on Tubi and let them know there’s a big fan base out here who love it.
