What Happened to Monday is a Netflix original starring Noomi Rapace as seven siblings, all named for days of the week. The scifi thriller is set in England.
Willem Dafoe plays the grandfather of the septuplets. They live in a near future when families are allowed to have only one child. Having 7 is a definite disaster and must be hidden carefully. They deal with it by allowing each sister one day a week when she can leave the house – the day corresponding to her name. When they are out in public, they all pretend to be Karen, an only child.
One week, Monday leaves the house and doesn’t come back. That’s where the trouble begins. Lots of fighting and explosions follow, which means the sisters must be pretty kickass.
I can’t help comparing what’s going on here with the 7 identical sisters to Orphan Black. Tatiana Maslany set the bar really high for this kind of acting. In What Happened to Monday, each of the sisters has a different look. I’m guessing they all have different personalities, ways of being, and skillsets as well. It will be interesting to see what Noomi Rapace does with the 7 parts.
Glenn Close also stars in What Happened to Monday. Glenn Close is the evil head of the evil Child Allocation Bureau. Written by Max Botkin and Kerry Williamson and directed by Tommy Wirkola, the film premiers on August 18.
A female reviewer at Variety really hated What Happened to Monday. What do you think? Are you going to check it out?
