The Estate review: old-school style comedy

David Duchovny, Kathleen Turner, Toni Collette, and Rosemarie DeWitt in The Estate

The Estate made me laugh. It’s broad comedy about hair-brained schemes, old-fashioned in its style. The story is about a group of cousins competing for the estate of their rich aunt and stars some great actors who deliver the comedy with enthusiasm.

Macey (Toni Collette) and Savanna (Anna Paris) are slowly going broke trying to run their dad’s failing diner in a run down section of New Orleans. Their half sister Ellen (Keyla Monterroso Mejia) plays Dungeons and Dragons 100% of the time. Their mother (Patricia French) informs them that their aunt is dying of cancer.

Everyone, especially mom, hates Aunt Hilda (Kathleen Turner). Aunt Hilda hates them all right back. But here’s the problem. Aunt Hilda is rich.

Macey and Savanna decide they can be nice to Aunt Hilda long enough to be mentioned in her will.

When they get to Aunt Hilda’s fancy house they discover their other cousin Beatrice (Rosemarie DeWitt) is already there with her much misused husband James (Ron Livingston). Creepy cousin Richard (David Duchovny) shows up soon after.

They all want the money. They will do anything to get it.

The jokes are gross, double entendres litter the dialog, the schemes they dream up to be the chosen one to inherit the estate are ridiculous. Even so, it made me laugh.

The trailer gives you a taste of what the film will be like.

If this looks like it will make you laugh, too, the film is now streaming on Netflix.
