Interactive Fun with Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend is a new interactive game/adventure. If you know the Kimmy Schmidt franchise and like the characters, you’ll probably have fun fooling around with this.

Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs the Reverend stars the regular crowd of Ellie Kemper, Tituss Burgess, Carol Kane, and Jane Krakowski. Also around is Jon Hamm as the Reverend – the person Kimmy is after in this series.

The story begins with the news that Kimmy is marrying an English royal, Prince Frederick (Daniel Radcliffe). We go from helping decide which wedding dress she should wear to realizing that the Reverend had other bunkers with other women in other places. Naturally, Kimmy will be the one to rescue them.

If she can find them.

Kimmy is rich now. She has her own private jet. But an airplane can only get you so far. I love how much Titus hates exercise.

I thought Tina Fey and Robert Carlock wrote some better than usual jokes for this interactive adventure. Some of the jokes were surprises based on what choice the viewer made as to what should happen next.

I went through it twice and I’m sure I didn’t exhaust all the possibilities.

Going through the second time was not the same as the first time, even when I made the same choices at the decision points. That was a nice surprise. If you made a “wrong” choice that ended up with everyone dying, the game rewound and gave you another chance. I especially enjoyed what happened when I clicked the Skip Intro button the second time through.

Depending on what was happening with Kimmy on her adventure while she should have been planning a wedding, several clever choices were made as to who Prince Frederick was going to marry.

Carol Kane got to play her normal wacky self and the prince’s very English, Mary Poppins replica nanny. Stephanie D’Abruzzo played the most important character in the whole thing: Jan the backpack.

Claire Scanlon directed. She’s directed individual episodes from past seasons. This time she got the whole enchilada and ran with it.

Overall, the interactive parts of the special made it different and fun. I don’t think it will spawn dozens of new Kimmy Schmidt games or stories. It wasn’t THAT much fun. Netflix tried this before with an episode of Black Mirror and it didn’t take off with that platform.
