Música takes a musical trip into the mind of Rudy Mancuso. He plays himself in this movie, which he wrote and directed. Mancuso has a big following for his YouTube music, videos, and Awkward Puppets. This movie is a culmination of all the music, creativity and chaos he deals with each day from inside his own mind.
Música details how Rudy deals with synesthesia. Synesthesia is a neuropsychological trait in which the stimulation of one sense causes the automatic experience of another sense. In Rudy’s case, everyday sound turns to rhythm and music. He tells his story with music, dancing, puppets, and fantasy, all stirred together with total originality and creativity.
Rudy was in college, living at home with his mom (Maria Mancuso), and putting on musical puppet shows in the subway to make a few bucks. His girlfriend of 4 years, Haley (Francesca Reale), broke up with him. He was unable to pay attention to her because he was distracted by the music in his head.
Rudy’s friend Anwar (J.B. Smoove) had a food truck, which he drove all over Newark, NJ, and which Rudy always was able to find for lunch and advice.
As soon as Haley broke up with him, Rudy met Isabella (Camila Mendes). It was love, baby, love.
Isabella made an effort to understand Rudy. She couldn’t really, but she tried. Haley had never gone there. When Haley decided she wanted him back he tried dating both of them at the same time, which was hilarious and chaotic and filled with family drama.
This movie is hard to describe. It’s different and unusual. It’s charming and funny. It’s about something hard to represent but Mancuso manages to represent it quite well. It isn’t a love story, but it is a story about learning to love what you live with and learning how to share it with the world.
I don’t want to blanket recommend Música. I don’t think it’s for everyone. But if you want to experience something different, it will definitely fit the bill. It’s streaming on Prime Video.
