Review: Addicted to Fresno

Natasha Lyonne and Judy Greer in Addicted to Fresno

Addicted to Fresno is absurd comedy delivered by a brilliant cast of comedy geniuses.

Natasha Lyonne and Judy Greer star in Addicted to Fresno. They are joined by a plethora of bit players who turn in big performances. The other actors include Malcolm Barrett, Jessica St. Clair, Edward Barbanell, Ron Livingston, Aubrey Plaza, Kumail Nanjiani, Clea DuVall, Fred Armisen, and Molly Shannon.

Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne in Addicted to Fresno
Judy Greer and Natasha Lyonne are co-dependent, dysfunctional, totally messed-up sisters

The plot involves two dysfunctional sisters. One’s a sex addict who can’t control her addiction. One’s a straight-laced lesbian who can’t move on from her last girlfriend. There isn’t one smart decision between the two of them.

Their problems are serious, but their responses to these problems are more problematic than the actual problems. It makes for some crazy comedy. For example, to raise some quick cash, they decide to rob a sex toy store. They wind up with no cash and a cart load of purple dildos. Just so you know, you can make a little money with a purple dildo, but probably not as much as you need.

Written by Karey Dornetto and directed by Jamie Babbit, Addicted to Fresno eventually leads to a somewhat sensible conclusion. It gets you there in unusual ways, however.

You can watch the film on Amazon Video, Hulu, iTunes and other streamers. This 2015 film is good for a laugh and you’ll see Natasha Lyonne play against type as the uptight, rule following, good girl. Well, not completely against type – she’s playing a lesbian again.
