The Orphan Black episode “Ipsa Scientia Potestas Est” begins in Rachel’s bloody apartment. Daniel’s body litters the floor, Helena’s signature art drawn in blood decorates the walls. Dr. Leakie (Matt Frewer) thinks Rachel (Tatiana Maslany) should take a kinder, gentler approach to the situation. She thinks not.
Paul (Dylan Bruce) will replace Daniel as Rachel’s monitor. Paul is the universal monitor: he’s monitored Beth, Sarah, and now Rachel.
Sarah takes her super-hugger of a twin sister to Felix’s (Jordan Gavaris) place. Helena needs to get out of her bloody wedding dress and clean up. Sarah tells Helena to behave and calls her Meathead. Helena objects with, “Don’t call me this,” but the nickname seems to symbolize the developing bond and affection between them.
Felix wants nothing to do with babysitting Helena – he has a hot date with the morgue boy – and delivers Helena to Detective Bell (Kevin Hanchard) for safekeeping.
Delphine (Evelyne Brochu) learns there is a new stem cell line, compatible with Cosima, that could help her. They go to Dr. Leekie’s office in search of it and he finds them there. Turns out that Leekie is willing to defy Rachel’s directive to shut down the help for Cosima by giving her an injection of the stem cells. He also tells Cosima that the clone’s original genome was destroyed in a fire 20 years ago. We heard about this fire before in relation to Project LEDA.
Paul’s first job as Rachel’s new monitor is to take the gun that Daniel used to kill the cop at Cal’s house and put Felix’s fingerprints all over it. He manages to do that by interrupting Felix’s love fest. Paul calls Sarah and says Rachel wants them all – Sarah, Helena, and Kira – or Felix goes down for murder. Rachel isn’t asking for Felix, which shoots down my budding theory that he might be a clone, too.
At Art Bell’s apartment, Helena is silent. She watches fish while Art asks questions about Maggie Chen and the Prolethians. Finally he feeds her, which loosens her up and she begins to talk. Interestingly, she asks as many questions as she answers, and her questions are intelligent ones. Also, she does love the powdered donuts.
Helena mimes poking the eyes out of one of her early tormentors. From art works we’ve seen of Helena’s where the eyes were X-ed out of a nun, I’m guessing her tormentor was a nun. She mentions a locker and the Swan Man who played God. Then she uses the lid off a sardine can to open her handcuffs and leaves Art cuffed to the wall. She goes to a storage unit (locker) where she has a motorcycle.
Cal (Michiel Huisman) and Kira (Skyler Wexler) are still playing house in the camper. Cal is being a great dad, Kira is being quick-witted and showing signs of ESP. Cal’s hiding a gun and carrying a fake ID. He assures Sarah when she calls that they are close enough to come get her whenever she’s ready.
At the Prolethian compound, Gracie’s (Zoé De Grand Maison) mouth was sutured shut as punishment for Helena’s escape. Henrik (Peter Outerbridge) and her mother Bonnie (Kristin Booth) tell her that, “She can rot,” if she refuses to talk about what happened. If they don’t find Helena, Gracie will carry the egg currently reproducing itself in a Petri dish.
Sarah and Art are in pursuit of Helena. Helena helped out by leaving some GPS coordinates at Art Bell’s. They find the locker and learn that Ethan Duncan is still alive. On the back of a recent photo of him is says “Swan Man.” Helena has taken off with a sniper rifle.
Guess what Paul’s second job as Rachel’s new monitor is? Sex slave.
Helena sets up the rifle in a apartment across from Rachel’s. As she takes aim and prepares to eliminate the problem that is Rachel, we see Rachel and Paul have sex. It’s weird sex. Rachel demands complete control. She orchestrates Paul’s every move and slaps him when he thinks for himself. Rachel demonstrates a kind of ruthless eagerness that is creepy and disturbing. She’s extremely turned on, but it’s the power and control that excite her, not the actual sex.
Helena, watching, says, “Pretty, dirty, sexy Rachel – like my mother.” Is there some woman somewhere that Helena once called mother?
Art and Sarah arrive and want Helena to put the gun down.
Helena wants Sarah to look at what Rachel is doing, at the “unfaithful” Paul. Sarah begs her not to shoot. She explains that Felix will be in trouble if Rachel dies. Sarah walks in front of the rifle and says she doesn’t care about Paul.
Sarah uses tears and some clever talk to convince Helena that they are family now, that they need to care for each other, and that Felix is part of that family. Finally Helena puts down the gun.
Helena and Sarah join hands. They walk out of the room with arms around each other. Sarah calls Helena Meathead again, and Helena responds, “Don’t call me this.” In the car, Helena tells Sarah that they need to go to Cold River, the place of screams.
Sarah meets Dr. Leekie in a bar. She demands Felix in return for Ethan Duncan, who is still alive. Leekie mentions that Cosima is sick – news to Sarah. When Sarah leaves, we realize Paul followed Leekie there. It’s really hard to tell where the real loyalties are with Paul and Leekie. They are ciphers, willing to double-cross anyone, but we aren’t sure why.
This episode was written by Tony Elliott, who is responsible for much of the writing in season 2. It was directed by Helen Shaver. She shared quite a bit about the experience on her Twitter account. Tatiana seemed to enjoy having her as a director.
We begin this episode of Lost Girl back in the conversation in which The Keeper (Christine Horne) tells Bo (Anna Silk) her blood has spoken and she’s dark.
Bo calls bullshit on The Keeper, but, alas, the gargoyle read her blood when he took that chunk out of her arm. Bo wants to know how something so momentous could happen without her approval. Seems it’s a mystery for her and whoever led the dark recently – that would be Vex (Paul Amos). The Keeper tells Bo to leave. Bo says, “If anyone’s taking a leave, it’s you and your circle jerk of doom.” She planned this as her grand exit remark, but The Keeper adds, “If you see the human doctor or that terrorist pet of yours, tell them we will see them soon. Their deaths will be most painful.”
Bo tries sucking the chi from everyone in the room, but as soon as she does it goes right back where it came from and Bo collapses on the floor.
Bo’s current choices are, 1) Pay fealty to the leader of the dark Fae, or 2) die. I hate it when The Keeper gets in the last word.
Bo and Kenzi (Ksenia Solo) go to some joint where the purpose of the place is either to make a whole lot of 69 jokes or else let Bo fill up on sexual chi.
I’ve said for 4 seasons that Bo needs a place she can pop in on her way home, a place away from her love life, to fill up on sex. A gym full of Amazons, or a biker bar full of dudes in leather jackets. A place to service her needs. All of a sudden such a place appears, serving up just what Bo craves. Welcome to Club 69. Take a number.
Once Bo’s recharged the old double D’s – her batteries, you silly – she blames her current problem on The Wanderer. She’s ready to find him and plans to use Vex to help her.
Kenzi thinks maybe Dyson could help, but he’s still off somewhere searching for Lauren (Zoie Palmer).
Dyson isn’t the only person MIA in this episode: Hale is missing, too. Every episode so far in season 4 has had missing persons. Is this a meaningful statement on the “lostness” of everyone in season 4, or is it budget cuts?
Bo and Kenzi storm The Morrigan’s place to discover that Evony (Emanuelle Vaugier) is back and très happy that Bo has joined the dark Fae. Since Bo thought Evony was dead, she is a bit surprised finding her here. Bo says she’s having her dark conversion annulled as soon as she gets Vex.
The Morrigan invites them to a dark Fae party. The Morrigan says Bo can get out of being dark Fae if she shows proof she was tricked before the next full moon – which is that night.
Trick (Rick Howland) promises to do dinner with someone on the phone if they will get him intel on The Wanderer. When he hangs up the phone, he looks at a pulsating seed or nut thingy. Whatever it is, it requires worrisome music as it pulsates. Trick locks it in his vault.
A man appears out of the dark to tell Trick he’s been summoned by the Una Mens for an inquisition on his life.
Kenzi, Bo, and Tamsin (Rachel Skarsten) arrive at the dark Fae party. Kenzi goes straight for the food and booze. Evony offers Bo a human to feed on. Bo sends the human and her human friends packing. Evony finds Bo’s refusal to feed off the human lame. She argues that at least the dark Fae are honest about what they do, unlike the light Fae who pretend they are better than the dark.
Evony shepherds Bo outside where they continue to argue about whether or not Bo is going to stay dark and be loyal to The Morrigan. The Morrigan repeats the story that Vex is who they both need to find. The Morrigan is “giving her every resource” to find him. To prove what a good friend she is now, Evony turns Bo around to see this.
Lauren walks across a grassy field, looking so gorgeous it’s likes she’s a Valentine’s Day commercial.
Bo smiles as Lauren walks closer in slo-mo. As Bo watches this heavenly creature approach, she frowns slightly – maybe things aren’t entirely perfect in the situation.
While the Bo and Lauren reunion is going on, Trick is before The Keeper for his inquisition. We learn the story of the Una Mens. When the Blood King became corrupt, a council was made of members willing to sacrifice their individual flaws to form a single soul without ego or ambition. The Blood King agreed, then betrayed the Una Mens. The deal involved every one of the six council members swallowing a seed of the sacred papyrus plant to be blessed as a single vessel of humility and justice. The king stole his seed and vanished. (Hey, Keeper, I think Trick has it in his vault.)
The Keeper says if the Blood King swallows the sacred seed, he can be unchallenged and take his place among them. Trick likes the unchallenged part of her remarks.
Bo and Lauren find a quiet room at the party, where they say they have a lot to talk about but can’t stop kissing long enough to say much or eat the quiche a waiter offers. Bo, in her new none-too-tender way, is ready to rip Lauren’s dress off her right there at the party. Lauren doesn’t seem offended, she only wants more kisses.
Kenzi and Tamsin are filling plates off a table covered with 9000 kinds of food, when Kenzi picks up some sushi and discovers Bruce under it. The sushi table is actually Bruce (Ron Archer). Kenzi calls him brushi.
He says it’s his punishment. He’s shirtless (hey, someone’s gotta do it – Dyson’s not here) and Kenzi pulls a tablecloth off a nearby table to wrap around him. The bride and groom whose party this is lay dead under the table, but Kenzi is more interested in Bruce. Bruce, however, feels bad because they read their vows in iambic pentameter – so lovely.
Bo and Lauren continue kissing as fast as they can. Lauren says, “Bo, I’m so glad you’re here.” She pauses, “Why are you here?” Equally interesting but unasked by Bo: why is Lauren here?
“Vex worked with The Wanderer to turn me dark.” You’re dark? asks Lauren. Lauren says she’s hiding from the Una Mens. That does not sound right – the Una Mens isn’t who had her captive in the last episode, even though they threatened Bo with Lauren’s name. Bo and Lauren promise to tell each other everything, but instead start kissing again.
Evony comes and and goes back to business. She wants a blood oath that Bo will bring Vex to her. In exchange, she offers the means to find him.
In walks Pietra (Samantha Espie) who is super pumped to be going on an adventure with Bo as one of “Evony’s Angels.” Evony explains that Bo also needs a certain drug that only you-know-who can provide to make Vex compliant. Evony leaves with the Scavenger and tells Bo and Lauren they have a few minutes to collect themselves.
Not much time, says Lauren. Bo figures waste not, want not, and grabs Lauren for another kiss.
Bo, Lauren and Pietra take off in the dead bride and groom’s limo to search for Vex. A Just Married sign and a string of cans decorate the back. Pietra does some scavenging and comes back with a huge knife.
The knife is the key to Vex being able to cut out some poison which prevents him from leaving town. Vex is expecting Pietra to bring him the knife.
Bruce, still shirtless, but not for long so enjoy it while you can, tells Kenzi he can be saved if another Fae masters him until his punishment is fulfilled. Kenzi immediately tells Tamsin, who is, what – 3 weeks old by now – to master Bruce.
Tamsin grabs a mic from the D.J. (so convenient there’s a D.J. at this party) and says she’s gonna master all over the big guy, Bruce.
Wait one sec. You can’t just declare yourself a master. You have to duel for it with the current master. Evony calls out the “dualist.”
The dualist is a bad ass chick that isn’t going to take any shit off of anyone. Unfortunately she doesn’t have any lines, so I can’t find a credit for her name. Just call her Awesome Personified for now.
On the street where Pietra is attempting to attract the attention of Vex by marching about with the big knife, Lauren gives Bo a syringe full of Socrates’ own hallucinogenic for subduing Vex.
Bo wants to talk because they could be there a while. She wants to know about their break, about Taft, about who Karen is. The heart-to-heart is interrupted when a tall blonde who looks like she’s auditioning for a part as a walker on The Walking Dead stumbles up and snatches the big knife. Clearly, Vex’s mesmering at work. Bo takes off after the walker.
She finds Vex in a warehouse. She tells him he and The Wanderer are going to undo making her dark Fae. He says he knows nothing about a Wanderer but legends. She intends to haul him back to the Morrigan.
Through a misshap with the girl who was on her way to The Walking Dead, Vex shoots the drug into Bo. We see that Vex’s hand is seriously messed up. We also see that Vex’s messed up hand looks something like a glimpse of arm we saw in episode 4 when Lauren’s captor revealed himself.
Bo wakes on a bed, paralyzed. Vex is boiling up something to help him with some surgery.
He must cut off his hand with the giant knife in order to save his own life. He’s the last mesmer and not about to go quietly into that good night. Bo urges Vex not to amputate his own hand. Lauren didn’t do a full amputation – just a break. Now they are back together again and Bo is humming heart happy songs.
Vex is annoyed by her happy heart and ready to cut off his right hand, Ginger, because he’ll still be able to dance with Fred, his left hand. Most guys name their junk, but not Vex.
At the party Evony flips a coin and Tamsin gets to pick the weapons for the duel over Bruce. She chooses to dance. Lucky us, there is a D.J. handy to spin some tunes.
Dance to the death commences. Tamsin’s been getting lessons from Kenzi, but she’s pretty terrible, although I judged her twerking improved.
Awesome Personified, however, is awesome, and clearly going to win the battle to remain the master of Bruce.
But wait, Tamsin has a secret weapon.
Tamsin goes skeletor on the dualist and kills her right there. One way to dance to the death, I guess. Tamsin’s a bit surprised and upset by her Valkyrie powers but the Morrigan says, “Well done, our little blooming warrior princess.”
Back at the warehouse, Bo regains some movement. Vex drinks the stuff he’s been brewing and THWACK, he chops off the hand just as Bo is able to get off the bed.
Oh, gross. She picks up the hand. Don’t mesmers bleed?
Vex uncovers a red sports car that looks like it should belong to Agent Colson on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D and which he will now have trouble driving. The missing hand, you know.
Bo chases after him and learns that she should have been talking to The Morrigan’s archivist if she wanted answers. Bo realizes The Morrigan played her. Vex wants her to “take the stick” if he takes the clutch and together they can drive off in the hot red sports car.
We miss the whole car driving experience and go straight to The Morrigan’s office for the next scene. Bo gives Evony the hand in a bag of ice, but Evony wants ALL of Vex to get rid of the Una Mens. Bo says she won’t let him be tortured. Evony says okay, if Bo agrees to be responsible for him. She says fine, so now Bo is babysitting Vex again.
Bo says, “Archivist. Now.” The Morrigan says, “Oh, you figured it out.”
The archivist (Clint Butler) enters and pulls a layer of skin off his bald head. Any pledge to the dark shows up there. He hands the flap of skin to Bo. The Morrigan, peaking over her shoulder, says, “There’s your signature. And there’s your sponsor.”
Bo reads from the flap of skin, “Who’s Raynor?”
Evony hasn’t a clue. Bo wants her to tear it up because she obviously had nothing to do with the agreement. Evony says it’s a binding agreement and the only person who can change it is her sponsor.
Bo snatches Vex’s hand back. Lauren walks in. Evony conveniently leaves her own office so Bo and Lauren can share doleful eye contact.
Cut to the Dungeon. The Keeper is still questioning Trick. She offers him the job of The Ash. He wants it.
Bo wants to take Lauren back to her place to share a giant claw-footed bathtub.
Lauren makes one of those awful speeches she does periodically when she’s protecting someone. (Speaking of Crystal, where do you think she is?) She says she can’t go back with the light. The light never looked for her, but the dark offered her protection. No one else came. With the dark she can come and go as she pleases. Lauren says, I feel free. Bo says, I could free you.
Lauren says, How? Bo says I could claim you. Lauren thinks that’s not freedom.
Lauren pats Bo’s shoulder. “It’s gonna be okay, Bo. Now that you’re dark, I’ll see you around.” I’ll see you around? What is Lauren doing?
Maybe Bo recognizes that Lauren’s speech closely resembles the cover story speech she delivered at Taft’s lab, because she says, “When you’re ready to come back to your real family, let me know.” Even so, Bo looks crushed as she leaves. No happy heart songs now.
Kenzi and Bruce talk in Kenzi’s bedroom. (Kenzi’s bedroom again. Hello room.) She tells him he’s free and he should spread his wings and fly. Tamsin, who is pretending to sleep nearby, smiles at this suggestion. I wonder, can Valkyries fly?
Bo brings Vex’s hand in a copper bucket of ice to the Dal. A drink and a talk with Trick at the Dal is the closest Bo has come to doing something normal since she’s been back. He tells her he’s been named the acting Ash. They drink to how odd it is that Trick is the head of the light and Bo is the darling of the dark.
She asks about Raynor. Trick says they need to look in the King’s book of records.
There’s a rush of dramatic music and we see something spilled on the floor but I cannot tell what it is. Maybe the empty container that once held that pulsing seed?
The Archivist enters the dungeon where he gives the succubus declaration, AKA the hunk of skin from his bald head, to The Keeper. She looks at it and opens a big book.
She looks for the name Raynor. When she finds it the letters go all squiggly. She says, “No. It cannot be. Never again.”
“The Wanderer” plays as the credits roll.
The Bo and Lauren reunion is less than perfect, I suspect because Lauren is once again, for the millionth time, doing something she doesn’t want to do because someone she cares about is in danger. If I’m right, that may mean Ali Liebert isn’t finished with Lost Girl yet.
The name Raynor comes from a root word that means king or leader. In Norse the meaning of the name Raynor is warrior from the gods. I’m thinking that means The Wanderer. The music at the end was a big clue, but the name tipped me off long before the final credits.
I’m not convinced that Vex is the guy who was holding Lauren and Crystal in episode 4. It didn’t sound like Vex on the speaker. Why would Vex call her Karen? But the hand looked wonky like Vex’s hand. Who else could it be and how did Lauren get delivered to The Morrigan?
Since Bo can be healed by sexual chi, I’ve indulged in wishful thinking that the cruel, not-our-regular Bo we’ve seen in the previous episodes this season would be healed by Lauren’s return. Healing love, don’t you know. It almost seemed like that was happening, but it didn’t quite. The jury is still out on whether Bo can return to her pure heart.

It’s the morning after everyone was up all night looking for Alan (Derek Jacobi) and Celia (Anne Reid) and after Caroline (Sarah Lancashire) announced to her husband John (Tony Gardner) that she’s been seeing someone.
Caroline parks at her school. She’s on the phone to Kate (Nina Sosanya), all chirpy voiced, asking her to come to her office.
In her office, she grabs Kate, pushes her up against a door, kisses her passionately and pulls up her shirt to reach under and have a feel. She steps back, smiling, and says, “I told John. It felt good.”
Kate asks Caroline if she wants to come round tonight. Caroline says, “Yep.” She studies Kate’s face and announces, “You’re very pretty.” Kate answers, “You’re magnificent.” I have to agree with both of them about it. Caroline whispers something we cannot hear in Kate’s ear, but we can assume it was naughty indeed. They almost kiss again but an assistant comes in with a cup of tea. The assistant talks about the day’s calendar, offers lunch, and heads off.
Caroline collapses in tears with the same passionate energy she had just devoted to kissing, and moans, “I thought she was dead last night. There was this one moment when I thought that’s it. And I thought how unfair that was, to find that one person again after all these years and then die.”
She realizes she sitting on the floor. Kate suggests maybe she should be home resting. Caroline asks if Kate will be home by 4 o’clock and Kate says, “I can be.”
At the farm, Alan is watching Celia sleep. She’s on the couch. He perched on the other end, enjoying the sight of her. He brings in tea and the rattling of the china wakes her. She says, “We keep having adventures!” He reminds her that their adventures have been her idea. They talk about the “distinct presence” in the old Hall last night. Celia says, “We’re back in the land of the living now.”
He starts to tell her something about when Gillian’s husband died, but Paul (Sacha Dhawan) comes crashing down the stairs and through the door. He writhes on the floor in pain muttering about keeping his fluids up as Alan explains who he is.
A knock on the door and it’s Alan’s two sidekicks (Paul Copley and Roy Barraclough) which leads Alan to ask, “Is it Tuesday?” The fellas apparently have a regular Tuesday thing.
Celia is on the phone to Caroline while outside a pub with Alan and the fellas. She asks Caroline to bring her fresh knickers, her toothbrush, and a nightie so she can stay in Halifax a few days. Caroline doesn’t want to do that but asks to call her later. Celia tries to make her feel guilty, apparently an old and well worn game with them, then asks her what she wants for her birthday tomorrow. Caroline manages to get off the phone by promising to call her later. In the pub, Paul is there, trying to drink a pint. Guess they didn’t want to leave him alone at the farm. Alan and his sidekicks discuss Gillian’s birthday tomorrow. Well, well, well, isn’t that interesting. Caroline and Gillian have the same birthday. Alan wants to buy Gillian a used Land Rover and knows where he can find one. He wants to go have a look at it.
Sidekick number one lists his qualifications to be Alan’s best man. Alan won’t commit.
Celia comes in to join them. She says to Paul, “I hope you’re not taking pain killers and drinking alcohol.” He asks her to get him a straw. Cheeky.
Gillian (Nicola Walker) arrives at the house to find it empty. She calls her dad but his phone is on the table. She picks it up and talks to herself on two phones for a funny moment. Then she calls Caroline who explains they’re at a pub. Caroline asks Gillian if she can get her mom a few things – she doesn’t explain why, but we know it will leave her free to go to Kate’s. Gillian can do.
Out in a muddy field, Alan is trying out the used Land Rover. Paul and the two sidekicks are stuffed in the back. Gillian calls and says they are to take Paul to his mother’s house and she asks what size knickers to buy. Celia pretends she can’t hear – no way she’ll discuss knickers in front of these blokes – and hangs up. Sidekick number two announces that the clutch needs to be replaced. And – they are stuck in the mud.
Caroline rings Kate’s doorbell, looking incredibly eager. Just as they are about to start kissing again, Gillian calls asking about knicker sizes for Caroline’s mum. This gives Kate the giggles and we get to see Sarah Lancashire show off her physical comedy skills.
Alan buys a new clutch, and sidekick number two makes his pitch to be best man. Alan doesn’t commit.
Alan and Celia hide the Land Rover in the barn and go inside. He makes tea and tells Celia his story. When Gillian’s husband Eddie put his head in the log splitter, he didn’t die immediately. Gillian stood and watched him die without calling an ambulance. After about an hour, Alan arrived. Gillian told him what had happened and that she had called the police. Alan feels guilty and responsible for being a party to something that wasn’t right. He doesn’t blame Gillian, he just feels guilty about his part. Celia does not blame him or Gillian and reminds Alan about wanting to kill her own husband. Alan says sometimes he feels as if Eddie’s ghost is in the barn and that’s why the Hall bothered him.
They talk about jiving in the old days, and move on to happier thoughts. When Gillian gets back, she hears music and finds them dancing in the living room, much to her delight. (Derek Jocobi is a damn good dancer, by the way.) Gillian snaps their picture and texts it to Caroline. They stop dancing when they see Gillian. Alan is winded, but not having any chest pains.
Gillian says Robbie is bringing Raff back home tonight. She’s invited Robbie (Dean Andrews) to dinner and seems excited about it. She’s bought food and wine and wants to celebrate. She tells her dad Robbie apologized last night.
Caroline breezes in at home – her afternoon with Kate must have gone well, she’s very happy. John wants to know where she’s been. He wants to know who it is. Caroline wants to know if Judith is pretty – he says no. He says he thought they were going to try to make it work for the boys. He says he can’t stay there if she’s going to sleep around. She says, well maybe we should get divorced. She says if she’s going to be with someone she wants to have them at the house where she can have them any time she’d like. Caroline says it’s like a fog has lifted from her, that she’s happy for the first time in years. John says, “You’re not moving him in here.” Caroline says, “It’s not a he.”
Tony Gardner’s rendition of processing this announcement is absolutely perfect! Caroline is going on and on about something related to the boys but I can’t hear it for laughing so hard at the expressions rolling across Tony Gardners’ face. He’s gobsmacked.
Gillian phones and the two women discover that they share the same birthday. They both turn 46 tomorrow. They’re twins!
John, in the garden, calls Judith (Ronni Ancona).
Robbie and Gillian are saying goodnight. He asks her out for a meal and she says yes. He kisses her, a move she rather likes. She asks him to stay. He refuses.
William (Edward Ashley) wakes Caroline on the couch and says she should go to bed. He asks her if she’s seeing someone and if it’s Kate McKenzie. She bumbles around a bit and he says, “She’s nice, she’s interesting, she’s kind. I want you to be happy.”
Next morning Alan presents the Land Rover – and the clutch – to Gillian. She’ll have to install the clutch herself.
A car roars up and dumps Paul on the ground. His mother won’t have him. Maybe because he keeps calling her a bitch. Gillian walks away and leaves him in sprawled in the dirt.
At Judith’s, John is talking to Judith about how Caroline couldn’t be a lesbian. “Aren’t you quaint?” says Judith. She wants to know what it’s like to get hot and steamy with a woman. Then she points out that the woman he’s been living with for 18 years has probably been faking it every single time. Caroline calls and tells him she’s cooking for her “friend” and the boys that night for her birthday. She wants him to join them if he can behave like an adult. He finally clicks on the fact that he knows who the woman must be – the woman Caroline had in the garden.
Celia and Alan, still searching for a wedding venue, are looking at an impersonal public space. They talk about a chapel at Caroline’s school. That might be the answer.
Gillian is installing the clutch when John calls. He says she gives such good advice he wants to come talk to her. She tells him okay.
Caroline is cooking, drinking wine, and so happy she’s almost dancing. She answers the door to find Kate. William wants Kate to come play Scrabble with him and Lawrence (Louis Greatorex) before dinner.
Kate agrees to Scrabble, but steals a few kisses before she goes. Caroline says William knows about them and is being brilliant about it.
On the farm, John, Robbie, Paul and Raff are lined up like ducks in the living room. Gillian is pacing the floor in her bedroom. Alan and Celia arrive from their venue search. Alan again brings up the “manslaughter” he confessed earlier. She again reassures him. They go in laden with boxes and sacks from shopping.
Gillian tries to warn Celia about John and what’s going on. She can’t quite get it out about Caroline and Kate. John, who naturally is drunk, manages to announce that Caroline is a lesbian in the most offensive way. And Celia is indeed offended – both by the thought that her daughter is a lesbian and by John’s behavior. She gets very upset. Alan and Robbie try to shut John’s ranting down. Celia says it’s wicked to say things like that. She wants to go home.
Caroline’s dinner with Kate and the boys is going well when Judith appears at the door. She’s drunk and looking for John. She’s dropped a wine bottle on the sidewalk. She talks about how she always wanted to be with a woman. She keels over backwards and when Caroline goes to help her Judith is covered with blood from the broken glass. Caroline takes her to the hospital.
Caroline’s at the hospital and Kate is back at Caroline’s with the boys. She’s talking with Lawrence. He knows his mother is seeing someone but doesn’t know who it is for sure. Gillian calls and wants him to tell his mother that Celia is on her way home and very upset about Caroline’s relationship with . . . with . . . with . . . Gillian can’t say it, but Lawrence says, “Kate.” Gillian says, yes, Kate. Everyone important to Caroline now knows about Kate.
Robbie is leaving for the evening. He says good night and kisses Gillian again. She goes into the living room and sits down to have a drink with John. John says he only came over because he wanted to see her again. He keeps thinking about her.
It’s late, Alan is tired. He’s driving Celia back home. He pulls the car over to rest his eyes for a few minutes. Celia is upset, won’t look at him. We got a glimpse at Celia’s conservative politics when she and Alan were taking politics a couple of days ago in the church. Her conservatism may cause trouble between her and her daughter when she gets home. Gillian got a new car for her birthday. Caroline’s about to get an earful for hers.
Gillian and John have a few drinks. Gillian tells John she can’t decide if he’s an evil git. He says he’s not horrible, just disappointingly human. She says, “Do you want to go upstairs,” and rubs his thigh. Paul is out of commission, Robbie’s being honorable. John it is. Will he be honorable, too? We don’t find out in this episode.
