The Law According to Lidia Poët, season 2, continues the true story of Italy’s first woman lawyer. The bold and courageous Lidia Poët advances her battle to be allowed to practice law as she works with her brother to defend clients and solve crimes.
The Law According to Lidia Poët stars Matilda De Angelis as Lidia. The story is set in the 1880s in Turin, Italy. In my review of season 1, I explained how she came to be living with her brother Enrico Poët (Pier Luigi Pasino) and his family.
Since Lidia was not allowed to practice law, even though she passed all the exams, she’s taken on the battle to 1) secure votes for women, and 2) change the laws so that women can do jobs like practice law. Her brother supports her and even agrees to run for Parliament so he can help change laws from the inside.
In season 1 Lidia was involved with two men. One of them left for America. Jacopo (Eduardo Scarpetta) stayed behind to start a newspaper. Lidia and Jacopo are not “together” in season 2, but the attraction lingers and they do a lot of joint investigating.
Lidia is also attracted to Prosecutor Fourneau (Gianmarco Saurino). He recognizes her genius for finding clues and interpreting crime scenes and they work together frequently. She’s attracted to him as well.
Lidia sees no need to marry and have children, but she’s no blushing maiden. As in season 1, she juggles between the two men as they work through the various crimes. She curses with 21st Century gusto, never backs down to any man in authority, and outsmarts everyone.
The season’s plots include bank fraud, a poisoning, several murders, and a very close call with a bomb. Telephones were just coming into use in season 2, which created a few humorous moments.
The costumes are delightful. The people are mostly charming. The filming locations look authentically 19th Century with brick streets and gorgeous old buildings. Letizia Lamartire directed several episodes.
I admire Lidia Poët and consider her a remarkable woman leader. I hope there will be another season of this series, but the final scene in season 2 was not a cliffhanger. Instead it showed Lidia gathering her courage and marching forth with determination into the next phase of her life. The Law According to Lidia Poët is a hit on Netflix, so that may mean another season could happen, but it hasn’t been announced at this time.
If you are a fan of this series, I’d love to hear your thoughts on it. The comments are open.
