The Wrong Track (På villspor) tells a heartwarming story about the rocky road to adulthood and acceptance of what life has to offer you. It’s a Norwegian film.
The Wrong Track begins by introducing us to Emilie (Ada Eide). She’s supposedly an adult, but she’s failing adulting. She has a 5 year old daughter and an ex, Joachim (Christian Rubeck), who wants full custody of their daughter. Emilie has no job, no purpose, and lives an ineffective life. She lets her broken toilet flood her flat and wants to stay with her brother until it’s fixed.

The brother, Gjermund (Trond Fausa), and his wife Silje (Marie Blokhus) have their own story line about wanting to conceive a child. The first night Emilie is at his house, she drinks a 70,000 kroner bottle of wine without asking permission. Gjermund tells her she can only stay there if she trains for the Birken with him. She is definitely not the type of person to do a 54 km cross country ski event, but she has to pretend to be willing or he’ll kick her out.
When her daughter finds out Emilie is training for the Birken, she is very excited and promises to be at the finish line cheering her on. That makes Emilie’s plan to drop out a little more difficult.
The plot and outcome are fairly predictable in The Wrong Track, but it’s enjoyable anyway.

Emilie meets a cute cop (Deniz Kaya) who A) does not arrest her for urinating in a public park, B) works at the Birken, and C) likes her.
Gjemund gets fed up with Silje talking about having a baby all the time. There are too many doctor visits, too many failures. They take him to the breaking point. The night before the Birken, he meets Instagram skiing influencer (Idun Daae Alstad) and thinks she is much more interesting than dear wife at home.
It all comes to a head at the cross country event. Will Emilie actually finish something for once in her life? Will Gjemund throw it all away? Will the cute cop stick around? Will the children be proud?
The actors were very good, the scenery was lovely, the ending was comforting and warm. It’s the kind of inspiring sports story you might want to watch with your kids, but there are some sex scenes and some naked men (just so you are aware).
You can catch this one on Netflix. If you watch it, let me know what you thought.
