Watch This: Trailer for On the Basis of Sex

Felicity Jones in On the Basis of Sex

On the Basis of Sex is the story of Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s early life as an attorney in search of ways to set legal precedents on the basis of sex.

Unlike this year’s earlier documentary RBG, On the Basis of Sex is a fictionalized telling. Felicity Jones stars as RBG, who comments, “Protests are important, but changing the culture means nothing if the law doesn’t change.” She set out to change the law to protect women.

She did it by finding a case of discrimination against a man! “If the law differentiates on the basis of sex, when will men and women ever be equal?” she asks

Ruth’s husband Marty (Armie Hammer) is shown supporting her in her career as she makes her way toward being a Justice on the Supreme Court. Further cast includes Justin Theroux, Kathy Bates, Sam Waterston, Jack Reynor, and Cailee Spaeny.

Coming just months after Betsy West and Julie Cohen’s documentary RBG, I think this new film reflects the growing realization of just how important Ruth Bader Ginsburg is to the Supreme Court and the country. The film comes on the 25th anniversary of Ginsburg’s appointment to the Supreme Court by President Bill Clinton.

Directed by Mimi Leder, the film will be in theaters in December. The script was written by Daniel Stiepleman, Ginsburg’s nephew.

    1. I saw on the news this week that RBG was in Santa Fe attending the opera. They showed her receiving a standing ovation from the crowd as she walked to her seat. There’s a book called “Notorious RBG: The Life and Times of Ruth Bader Ginsburg” you might enjoy reading.
