Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, and Mary Steenburgen! Hell, I don’t even care what the movie is. Okay. The movie is called Book Club. It’s about a fairly stodgy book club that decides to read Fifty Shades of Grey.
The four fabulous women in question – I say again, Diane Keaton, Candice Bergen, Jane Fonda, and Mary Steenburgen – all have their lives impacted by reading the racy BDSM novel.
Steenburgen is married to Craig T. Nelson. She pushes him a bit to develop some kink. Bergen starts dating Richard Dreyfuss and Keaton explores hooking up with Andy Garcia. Fonda redevelops an old flame in the form of Don Johnson. (Don Johnson happens to be the father of Dakota Johnson, the star of all those Fifty Shades movies.)
The trailer comes with jokes about Viagra, sexy bed wear, and other saucy, wink-filled material meant to make us laugh.
But it’s a serious business to acknowledge that a group of women over 65 still harbor an interest in sex. Representation matters. Most women over 65 aren’t as perfectly beautiful as movie stars but they are still living and breathing women who are whole people – sexuality included. I have my fingers crossed that Book Club will honor that with respect and not make buffoons of the older women.
These four iconic women of American entertainment make any movie worth seeing. But representation matters. Just sayin’.
Book Club will be in theaters on May 18.
