Review: Roar, a celebration of women

Merritt Wever in Roar

Roar is an 8 part anthology series. Each story is about a woman and a pointed women’s issue. The list of women in front of and behind the camera is compelling and should convince you to take a look at the series.

Roar has plenty of names to list. Let’s start behind the camera with creators Liz Flahive and Carly Mensch. Women directors involved are So Yong Kim, Anya Adams, Liz Flahive, Kim Gehrig, Rashida Jones, Channing Godfrey Peoples, and Quyen Tran.

And how about the women who star in these short episodes? They are Fivel Stewart, Meera Syal, Alison Brie, Issa Rae, Cynthia Erivo, Merritt Wever, Betty Gilpin, and Nicole Kidman.

My favorite episode was “The Woman Who was Fed by a Duck” with Merritt Wever. Merritt Wever was fantastic in this. Her acting partner for most of the story was a duck. A real duck, not CGI. An abusive and manipulative duck. Justin Kirk was the voice of this dick duck.

Each story had a different theme. They all dealt with women’s relationships. Relationships with themselves, with parents, with children, with romantic partners. They all examined the way women are treated in society. They were funny, serious, impossible, and imaginative.

The series is on Apple TV+.
