Review: Charlie’s Angels (2019)

Kristen Stewart, Naomi Scott, and Ella Balinska in Charlie's Angels

Charlie’s Angels (the 2019 version) recently showed up on STARZ. I couldn’t wait to watch it even though I knew it was supposed to be terrible. But I thought it would be fun.

Charlie’s Angels gave me exactly what I was expecting. A load of fun watching the antics of numerous kickass women as they cavort in a terrible movie.

I loved it.

For a bit of history, I was a devoted fan of the 1970s TV show version. I also liked the 2000 and the 2003 film versions. There is no way I was going to pass up this edition of the franchise. I never get tired of stories where the women are smarter and tougher than the men, and the latest from 2019 kept up the tradition.

Patrick Stewart and Elizabeth Banks in Charlie's Angels
That’s Bosley on the left. And on the right.

Charlie’s Angels was written and directed by Elizabeth Banks, who also starred as Bosley. Patrick Stewart was there as Bosley, too. In this iteration, a Bosley is a position, and many are needed because the agency has expanded all around the world.

The story began with two angels: Sabina (Kristen Stewart) and Jane (Ella Balinska). Before they are very far into the story they recruit Elena (Naomi Scott). Laced with a few quiet moments of angel bonding, the plot revolves around a clean power source, a lot of car chases, and a batch of hand to hand combat scenes with terrific stunts.

Filmed in Germany and Turkey, full of angels in every location, the film was slick and fast and not meant to be taken seriously.

I loved the little flash appearances from an array of actors like original angel Jaclyn Smith, plus Danica Patrick, Ronda Rousey, Laverne Cox and more.

The trailer pretty much tells you what to expect.

Are you a fan of the angels? Have you seen this version of their story?

  1. I still have my Starz as well. I tried on this one.. 15 min in and I just couldn’t continue.. I think the only way I could go back is if in the fall there are no new movies & TV and I’m stuck..though Starz will also be gone by then for me but that’s about it. hahahahahah I love that you review so much stuff though as it gives me pointers of what to look for! thanks!
