The fall TV season is underway, with old favorites coming back and new shows revealing their opening episodes. Time to unleash a brain dump, which is a few short takes on several shows.
The Gifted
Amy Acker drew me to watch The Gifted. I’m not up on the X-men stories or movies. I was simply following one of my favorite actors to a new show. The first episode didn’t impress me. I thought there was a lot of chewing of scenery going on. But the second episode felt more well done. I’ll stick with it.
The cast looks good with Stephen Moyer and a whole raft of talented young people including Natalie Alyn Lind, Percy Hynes White, Sean Teale, Jamie Chung, Blair Redford, and Emma Dumont. Plus there are several more actors playing cops and other roles.
Bring on the mutants! At a time when society is divided over differences, the themes in The Gifted can only be good.
Ten Days in the Valley
I truly love how imperfect a character Kyra Sedgwick plays in Ten Days in the Valley. She hides things from the police when her daughter is kidnapped. She tries to figure out what happened on her own so she doesn’t have to reveal her cocaine habit. In the process she gets herself into a worse mess.
A whole sea of characters swirl around her who may be in on the kidnapping in one way or another. That keeps the plot intriguing. After two episodes, I’m ready to say that Ten Days in the Valley is very well written. Tassie Cameron get credit for that.
Supergirl
Alex (Chyler Leigh) and Maggie (Floriana Lima) are planning their wedding. A new character named Reign (Odette Annable) shows up. She looks like she may recur this season. Lena (Katie McGrath) makes a big best friend move for Kara.
And Supergirl (Melissa Benoist)? Well, Supergirl is pissed. Mon-El is gone and she’s pissed about it. She’s scowls at everyone, decides Kara Danvers is an unnecessary part of her life, and saves absolutely everyone from everything major and minor just to keep busy.
I like serious Supergirl. I like that Melissa Benoist plays Supergirl like a grownup now. She has some experience and maturity under her cape and doesn’t come across as a giggly naive teen anymore. Nope, now she’s a grouchy, grieving adult.
Passing Glances
How to Get Away with Murder brought in Jimmy Smits for what looks like a twisty-turny time warped plot line this year. Viola Davis is simply amazing all over again for the new season.
Not sure I like the new power-mad Olivia Pope (Kerry Washington) on Scandal.
This is Us continues to be wonderful. So glad I finally started watching this show. By the way, what is all this talk about sobbing wildly over each episode? Why all the crying?
Sean Hayes in Will and Grace does physical comedy so well he almost made me fall out of my chair laughing twice.
