Thoughts on Pearson, S1E1, The Alderman

Gina Torres in Pearson

I could never really get interested in Suits. But the spinoff Pearson has my interest. What’s the difference? It’s all about the character in the lead role. Pearson features one kickass woman vs. two men in Suits. See the difference?

Episode 1 of the new series is “The Alderman.” Jessica Pearson (Gina Torres) has moved to Chicago after being disbarred. She starts a new job in the Mayor’s (Morgan Spector) office.

Jessica can’t do any actual lawyering, but she finds ways around it. She immediately clashes with Keri (Bethany Joy Lenz), the Mayor’s main lawyer and main squeeze.

Jessica Pearson’s personality and style were clearly delineated in this episode. She’s going to be formidable and unstoppable. I fell madly in love with Gina Torres way back in the days of Firefly when she walked around in leather pants with a gun strapped to her hip, space Western style. She’s perfected that powerful image to the point that she can do it in a contemporary business attire nowadays.

It felt to me like there were too many characters introduced in the first episode. Some of them could have waited an episode or two. Here are a few of them. Yoli (Isabel Arraiza), a lawyer in the Mayor’s office Derrick (Eli Goree), Jessica’s cousin Angela (Chantel Riley), and the villainous Pat McGann (Wayne Duvall). I like the inclusiveness of this cast, and I like that a woman with Gina Torres Afro-Cuban background has the lead in a major network series.

Even though I was having trouble catching who everyone was, I’ll be watching next week for more.

  1. I was glad to see Jessica back! Pearson is dark, much darker than any of Suits episodes. One of the things I like about Pearson is how the writers are finally exposing a richer character for Jessica, with her relationships with her family and partner.
