Watch This: Trailer for 20th Century Women

Annette Bening, Billy Crudup, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, Lucas Jade Zumann, and Billy Crudup in 20th Century Women

Set for a December 25 release, 20th Century Women stars Annette Bening, Elle Fanning, Greta Gerwig, and Billy Crudup in a story set in 1979. Jimmy Carter is on the TV talking about a “crisis of confidence” – he was sure right about that one – and a group of women team up to raise a troubled teen (Lucas Jade Zumann).

Director Mike Moore is said to have based all the women on women from his own life. Dorothea (Bening) is a single mother struggling to raise her troubled teenage son. She seeks out the help of two women. Abbie (Gerwig), a young and ambitious pink-haired photographer living with Dorothea, and Julie (Fanning), a young friend and confidante of her son’s who is wise beyond her years. Crudup plays a handyman who lives in a bungalow behind Dorothea’s house.

The trailer highlights some of the sensibilities and artifacts of the era with Volkswagens and old TVs, but I think the story will revolve around the unique family situation the 3 women create in order to get Dorothea’s teenager raised.

Heartwarming family fare for Christmas Day.
