Sophie Cookson and Judi Dench in Red Joan

Red Joan is a truth-based spy drama from the UK starring Sophie Cookson and Judi Dench as spy Joan Stanley. The spy played by the two women remained undetected for 50 years. Watch the trailer below.

Here’s the synopsis of the film: “The year is 2000 and Joan Stanley is living in contented retirement in suburbia at the turn of the millennium. Her tranquil life is suddenly disrupted when she’s arrested by MI5 and accused of providing intelligence to Communist Russia. Cut to 1938 where Joan is a Cambridge physics student who falls for young communist Leo Galich and through him, begins to see the world in a new light. Working at a top-secret nuclear research facility during WWII, Joan comes to the realization that the world is on the brink of mutually assured destruction. Confronted with an impossible question – what price would you pay for peace? – Joan must choose between betraying her country and loved ones or saving them.”

Red Joan premiered at TIFF in 2018. It was inspired by the true story of KGB spy Melita Norwood. Norwood gave the key to Britain’s atom bomb to the Soviet Union. Trevor Nunn directs the drama. The film is based on Jennie Rooney’s bestselling novel.

Others in Red Joan include Nina Sosanya, Tom Hughes, Ciarán Owens, Ben Miles, Stephen Campbell Moore, and Tereza Srbova. The film will be released in both the US and UK on April 19
