Roald Dahl’s Matilda the Musical was a complete surprise to me. I was expecting music, dancing, and a happy, cheerful children’s story. There was music and dancing, but Matilda’s story turned out to be a dark fantasy about child abuse and neglect.

High Water (Wielka woda), a suspense-filled true story from Poland
Let’s get the true parts of High Water (Wielka woda) out of the way first. In 1997, the River Oder flooded the Polish city Wroclaw causing great harm and death. The people knew the flood was coming, but incompetent local authorities didn’t take the needed action to save the city.

Daughter From Another Mother (Madre Solo hay Dos) brought its themes and messages to a strong conclusion in season 3. This charming and funny melodrama from Mexico ended with everyone in a good place and smiles all around.

Alone Together is a quiet and simple tale about the first weeks of the COVID lockdown in March 2020. It was written by, directed by, and stars Katie Holmes. The writing was ordinary, but the direction was good and gave us a positive example of the female gaze.

The Peripheral takes the heroine, Flynne Fisher (Chloë Grace Moretz), and sets her in two different future worlds at the same time in this sci-fi thriller. She struggles to survive in both worlds.

Smiley, an LGBTQ+ positive series from Spain
Smiley is a light-hearted comedy about the romantic entanglements of a group of friends in Barcelona, Spain. The smiley face emoji plays a significant part in the storyline, hence the title. A full range of LGBTQ+ characters fill the series with plenty of positive queer vibes.

Whitstable Pearl, season 2, oysters, crimes, and stalled romance
Whitstable Pearl, season 2, combines crime solving with character studies. It’s a warm-hearted series with likeable characters solving a new crime in each episode. The main characters are the same as in season 1.

The Woman King, fierce & heroic women save everyone
The Woman King from director Gina Prince-Bythewood tells a semi-true story of heroic warriors, enlightened leadership, and sisterhood. In the Kingdom of Dahomey, in the year 1823, the women warriors called Agojie fought against invaders and won.
