MPower: Marvel celebrates its women superheroes

Anglea Bassett in Black Panther

MPower is Marvel taking a look at the women superheroes in numerous Marvel movies and TV shows. It doesn’t detail every woman superhero in the Marvel universe in just 4 episodes, but touches on several.

The episode titles for MPower are The Women of Black Panther, Captain Marvel, Scarlet Witch, and Gamora.

Elizabeth Olsen as the Scarlet Witch

In discussing these four topics, quite a few characters get thrown into the mix. It isn’t just one character per episode. The Black Panther films have many women who qualify. Elizabeth Olsen and Kathryn Hahn both get lots of attention in the Scarlet Witch episode.

Brie Larson and Lashana Lynch in Captain Marvel

In the Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) episode we also hear about Maria Rambeau (Lashana Lynch), the Supreme Intelligence (Annette Bening), and Kamala Khan (Iman Vellani) from the Ms. Marvel TV series.

Zoe Saldana as Gamora, Pam Klementieff as Mantis, and Karen Gillan as Nebula get attention in the Guardians of the Galaxy episode.

If there’s a second season of this, I’d sure like to hear more about Kate Bishop, Natasha Romanoff, She-Hulk, Jessica Jones and some others. There are plenty more.

The interesting thing to me about this series was the variety of outlooks on the characters. Everyone from actors, costumers, casting people, set decorators, and writers got to have a say. I enjoyed getting the background information about character development, often over a series of Marvel properties.

In a way, this Disney+ series is self-serving. But I found it gave me perspective and a sense of the gravity the women superheroes in the Marvel universe bring to the stories. Certainly it opened up my understanding of them in a way that I hadn’t thought about before.

It isn’t must see TV, but it’s definitely interesting.

Bonus: Women of Marvel in upcoming film

The trailer for The Marvels came out recently. It starts some of the women talked about in the MPower series. I plan to see this one. Do you?
