The sci-fi thriller Annihilation based on Jeff VanderMeer’s best-selling Southern Reach Trilogy released its first teaser.
The story centers around a biologist who signs up for a dangerous, secret expedition where the laws of nature don’t apply. The trailer shows a five-woman team walking across a wide field and into a swirling wall of colors. In the books, they are entering Area X, a world where nature has returned in some bizarre ways.
Here’s the description of the book on Wikipedia. “The book describes a team of four women (a biologist, an anthropologist, a psychologist, and a surveyor) who set out into an area known as Area X. The area is abandoned and cut off from the rest of civilization. They are the 12th expedition. The other expeditions have been fraught with disappearances, suicides, aggressive cancers, and mental trauma.”
Of course, the movie may be slightly different.
The rather incredible cast includes Natalie Portman, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Gina Rodriguez, Tessa Thompson, Tuva Novotny and Oscar Isaac. If at least one of those women isn’t a favorite of yours, I’ll be surprised.
And here’s a nice bit of trivia from the author Jeff VanderMeer:
Re #Annihilation movie–if u haven’t read the book, know that a portion of my Annihilation novel royalties go to environmental causes. pic.twitter.com/lXIMY1uQ7z
